At age 10, I told my dad I didn't want to attend his wedding to his now wife.
This was upsetting for my Dad (understandably), and I saw that upset.
And while Adult Me knows that neither me nor my Dad did anything wrong in that situation, 10 year old me made the belief “it’s not ok to be honest about my feelings” 😢
That belief affected EVERYTHING I did.
Want to tell someone that I'm too tired to go out this weekend, could we rearrange? Don’t say that, you might upset them.
Want to tell someone that I don't want to have a meeting on my lunchbreak? Don’t say that, they might be relying on you.
Want to share in a Fb group that I left vet practice because of burnout, but if you’re feeling like that too, it doesn’t have to be that way? ABSOLUTELY DO NOT SAY THAT.
Mindfulness had been helping me with this
Gradually, through these kind of techniques, the belief that “it’s not ok to be honest about my feelings” was holding me back less and less.
But the comments on the FB group last month made that belief come back front and centre.
I decided to do something about it.
I did some EFT.
Specifically, a form called Matrix Reimprinting.
And I re-wrote that memory of me telling my Dad I didn’t want to go to his wedding.
I told my little 10 year old-self that two things can be true; you can be honest AND it can hurt people’s feelings. BUT that doesn’t mean honesty isn’t good or that people don’t want to hear how you feel.
Now on a conscious level, I already knew that. But I didn’t believe it deep down.
After 60 minutes of EFT, I'd changed my belief from “I hurt people when I’m honest about my feelings” to "people like it when I'm honest" 🤯
Which is why I laughed when someone said to me “you need therapy” on another Fb post.
We all have thoughts and beliefs that affect us every day
Mindfulness helps us notice them.
And you can change them with mindfulness. But it’s slow, and hard.
EFT makes that SO MUCH EASIER.
Let’s start changing some of your beliefs
What thoughts do you hear in your head, that you know aren’t true, but find SO hard not to believe?
If you share in the comments, I’ll do my best to recommend a free EFT meditation you can listen to to help 🙏
Because honestly, this modality is MAGIC, and more people need to experience it.
Sending love,
Lucy x
Want to learn more?
You can do EFT as a meditation listening to a track, or you can do it with a practitioner.
Just like having a one-to-one session with a yoga teacher will teach you a lot more than a group video online, you can re-write bigger beliefs with a practitioner.
Plus, you can then learn how to do it on yourself 🤯
Book a free call and let’s talk about how EFT, and my coaching package, could help you rewrite some of the beliefs that are holding you back.
Ooof. I love this:
"you can be honest AND it can hurt people’s feelings. BUT that doesn’t mean honesty isn’t good or that people don’t want to hear how you feel."
At the end of the day, we really cannot control the emotions and feelings of others anyways. But if people find out that we weren't honest? It usually ends up with more than hurt feelings.
